Paerdegat Basin is a small community in Brooklyn on Jamaica Bay. It is located next to Georgetown. The name literally means “horse gate”, which is a saltwater wetland area in Dutch. Paerdegat Basin is part of the neighborhood of Canarsie, one of the original five Dutch towns on Long Island and home to many parks.

Paerdegat Basin is the area of the actual basin on the eastern part of Canarsie, divided into 15 “Paerdegat streets”. A large area of Paerdegat Basin Park was acquired by the Parks department, and it serves as home to many species of birds and smaller water creatures as well as provides a welcome habitat for many species of birds and animals whose numbers have dwindled in recent years. 75 of the park’s 160 acres are underwater.
