Fort Greene is a neighborhood in Brooklyn where the days feel a little less rushed compared to some of the other areas of the city. The area is defined by the street of Park Avenue and Atlantic Avenue to the north and south, and Vanderbilt and Clinton Hill to the east and west. Other nearby neighborhoods include Brooklyn Heights, Boerum Hill, and Bedford-Stuyvesant.

The homes on streets like Cumberland, South Portland, and South Oxford Streets have details from previous periods and you will often find young mothers pushing strollers down the street in the nice months. Nearby is Fort Greene Park, where you can take a relaxing stroll before heading back to your New York car rental. For the most exciting places to visit in the neighborhood, check out Fulton Street and Dekalb Avenue for a number of great places to eat or hang out at night.

The Scene

The service here is always good, especially compared to some of the more upscale restaurants you may find in other parts of Fort Greene. A special recommendation in the brunches that are offered on Saturdays and Sundays. Or, for something completely different you should try Keur N 'Deye, a popular Senegalese restaurant on Fulton Street.

If you are in the area for some nightlife with your New York car rental, BAMcafe is known for its DJs, live music, and spoken word performances all weekend long. This is a great way to relax and kick back after a long week. There is also Frank's Cocktail Lounge, a bar where you will feel like you stepped back into the past but with a new, hip atmosphere. During the week, this bar is the same as it has been for years, while on weekends there are DJs spinning all the latest tunes. Thursday nights is one of the most interesting nights to visit because long-time performer Lonnie Youngblood still plays saxophone. Moe's has also come out as the quintessential Fort Greene bar, where you can really get a feel for the neighborhood. The crowd that gathers here is quite a mix of people, coming from all different backgrounds and interests. Most patrons are in the twenties or thirties, coming home from a long day at work, or people who are heading to BAM will stop by before or after they hit that bar. There are six beers on tap, and there is a variety of specialty cocktails that taste more like juice than alcohol. Happy hour runs from 4:30-7:30 on weekdays, and this is a good time to visit with your New York car rental. Be sure that if you do drink, you don't drive your New York car rental; take a cab.
