Carroll Gardens is a neighborhood in Brooklyn. The first thing you will notice as you drive in with your New York car rental are the brownstone facades. Carroll Gardens is an urban variation of the 19th century row house, created by Richard Butts. Butts created broad spaces between the houses, creating streets with a normal width, but with deep gardens on each side. The area was developed between 1869 and 1884, and it still has that charming feel from that time.

As you explore Carroll Gardens with your New York car rental, you will discover that the area was named after Charles Carroll, a Revolutionary War veteran who was the only Roman Catholic to sign the Declaration of Independence. The neighborhood was originally settled b Irish immigrants to the area in the early 19th century before the area was recreated by Richard Butts. Today, Italian conversations can still be heard on the street as there is still a vibrant community here.
